Ekaterina Salinder is an author and performer of songs in the Nenets language.
Ekaterina not only preserves the traditional Nenets folklore, but also presents it in a new sound, combining folk motifs with rock, pop music and electronics. Ekaterina is a synthesis of ancient Nenets folk songs and modern musical styles. The ethnic flavor of the stunning dance-game numbers turns into meditative melodies. Not often heard of ethno – so energetic, turbulent, like a river, ornate, attacking and proliferously. This is a real ethno-pop, made with a flexible and cheerful aggression. When reviews of Catherine write that it expresses “the essence of the soul of a nomad”, then this beautiful phrase takes on unexpectedly rich colors. So that’s what it is, this special and unusual soul!”.
Traditional folk music was created when time flowed slowly and the space was huge. Now both time and space have become very dense and require a new form from music. Catherine’s new form is created by combining several folk songs into one and giving them a new sound due to elements of rock, pop music and electronics. Today, Ekaterina is working on a new ethno-musical project, which will include new author’s songs by Ekaterina Salinder.
In the heart of frosty Yamal, under the bottomless blue sky, the songs that the singer Ekaterina sings are born. These are love songs about the native land. about nature, about what surrounds us, every day. What we see and hear around us every day, in the changing rhythms of nature, in natural reliefs — in forests, seas and mountains. In these songs, what we think of as birds soaring to the sky or fish plunging into the depths of the seas, when we admire the beauty of nature.
In 2005, Ekaterina released her first solo album “Born under the Polar Star”, which included songs of her own composition. She has performed in such countries as Estonia, Hungary, North Korea, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
